I am heavily influenced by the French impressionists, early minimalists, and American classical composers. I compose in a style that relies on patterns or combinations of patterns that often utilizes overlapping the hands and altering the tonality sometimes just one note at at time.
I try not to be conscience of meter, key, or tonality at all, but set out to write about geometric shapes, lines or patterns. once the piece starts to take form, then i start to associate emotions with it and that in turn influences the performance, and subsequently, the title.
I was born in South Carolina and, since my father was in the air force, moved constantly. I studied piano wherever we landed but constantly changing location was not the easiest for formal training – but the piano always managed to follow us around; Charleston, New Jersey, somewhere in Texas, Turkey, San Bernardino, Olympia, Seattle, San Francisco, and finally Oakland is now my home.
